Markers should be kept upside-down

markers and sharpies
For the exception of the felt tip, it is a bad habit to store pens upside down.

Is it better to keep pens up or down?

The tip of felt tip pens such as highlighters, Sharpies and Microns, whiteboard markers and Sharpies are best kept down. This keeps ink in contact and doesn't dry out. Rollerballs or ballpoints work best when they are kept upright to prevent them from leaking or getting gummy at their points.

Pens should be kept horizontally or vertically. You can store many pens horizontally or vertically depending on your preference. Both basic ballpoint pens as well as felt-tipped markers will store well in a pen drawer or pen jar.

Find out how to store markers in the most efficient way.

These are some tips to help you keep your markers, pencils and pens in top shape.

  1. Keep dual-ended markers/pens horizontally
  2. Place single-ended markers or gel pens vertically, with the cap tip facing down.
  3. Color pencils can be stored horizontally or vertically.
  4. Keep your colored pencils in a sealed container.

What should dry erase markers look like?

Keep your markers upright. Never put the cap on the top. This will cause ink to pool at the bottom, and the tip to dry before it is used up. Same goes for the reverse. Cap side down.
