Is it possible to paste wax on polyurethane

Paste wax can be used to polish an existing finish, such as varnish, shellac or polyurethane. Paste wax can be used to add shine to surfaces by filling in any scratches or voids.

So, how can you apply paste wax to polyurethane?

How to Apply Paste Wax over Polyurethane

  1. Get rid of all dust and dirt from the surface you are about to wax.
  2. Use 0000 steel wool to apply the wax or a cloth. Using a cloth will require some extra effort.
  3. Let the wax dry.
  4. Use a terrycloth towel, cheesecloth or a cotton diaper to buff the furniture's wax.

Can you apply a second coat without sanding, other than the one above? If you want to achieve the best finish, there is no substitute for sanding between coats. For the first coat, I thin oil-based urethane with 3 parts urethane and 1 part mineral spirits to get the best results when building or refinishing furniture. After the first coat, sand with 220 grit and wipe it down with a towel.

What is the maximum time I can wax polyurethane?

You should be fine with a one-week cure. You can apply wax for one week after applying the poly. You can probably get by with less but it's better to have a week to be 100% safe.

How can you make polyurethane shine?

Only apply one thin coat. Next, use 1,500-grit sandpaper to remove any dust nits. Use a soft cotton cloth or polishing pad to buff the finish to a high gloss using automotive paste wax (photo below), which contains fine abrasives that can polish the finish further.
