What are the three main types of rocks?

There are three types of rock: metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous. The differences between them are due to how they were formed. Sedimentary rock is formed from small particles of sand and shells. All these particles together are known as sediment.

So, which are the three types of rock and how do they form?

There are three main types of rocks: Metamorphic (Igneous), and Sedimentary. Metamorphic Rocks - Metamorphic rocks are formed with great heat and pressure. They can be found in the Earth's crust, where there is enough heat/pressure to create the rock. This magma orlava that has hardened is known as igneous rock.

What are the five types of rocks, other than those mentioned? Rocks: Igneous and Metamorphic

  • Andesite.
  • Basalt.
  • Dacite.
  • Diabase.
  • Diorite.
  • Gabbro.
  • Granite.
  • Obsidian.

It is also important to remember which of the three types you are referring to.

It is possible to remember the three types of rock by using the acronym SIM (Sedimentary Igneous, Metamorphic).

What is Diamond?

Rocks are made up of two or more minerals. Scientists estimate that there are approximately 4,000 minerals in the Earth. The diamond, which is the hardest mineral on Earth, is its name. It is possible to cut a diamond using another diamond.
