Can you plant alfalfa in July?

There are advantages and disadvantages to summer alfalfa seedings. Due to their agronomic crop rotation, many producers will likely plant their alfalfa seeds in the spring. For the next growing season, summer seedings that were planted in the fall/summer will be in full production.

Another question is when is the best time to plant alfalfa.

Late summer or fall are the best times to plant alfalfa in years with sufficient rainfall. Late summer seeding yields are typically higher than those from spring-sown alfalfa in the establishment years.

Also, is it possible to plant alfalfa in August. Central Kansas can plant alfalfa as late as mid September. Proper seedbed preparation will be crucial for late-summer plantings. The most important warning is to never plant in dry soil. August plantings in dry soil can remain dormant for several days until it rains.

This is not all. How late can you plant your hay?

The short answer is yes, for the first 10 days to two weeks of May. Seedling development and growth through the summer months will limit the 'end' of spring forage planting season.

How deep can you plant alfalfa in the ground?

Alfalfa grows quickly so it doesn't need to be planted in deep. It can be planted as low as a half-inch deep. Sprinkle the seeds evenly on the soil and cover with dirt. For 25 square feet, use 1/4 pound of seeds and space rows approximately 18-24 inches apart. Within seven to ten days, you should start to see sprouts.
