This title is based on a line from the Hebrew Bible, Ecclesiastes 7.4: "The heart and soul of the wise are in the house for mourning; but that of fools is at the house for mirth." In other words: wise people focus on death and loss, while foolish people only think of the positive.

What year was The House of Mirth established? SETTING. The novel is set mostly in New York City. However, a few chapters are located in Bellomont, a country estate owned by the Trenors. A brief episode is set in Monte Carlo. The novel was published in 1905, which is the beginning of the 20th century.
