What is the difference in energy density and nutrition density?

Energy dense foods have a lot of calories per portion. You can get calories from fat, protein, or carbohydrates. Nutrient-dense foods have high amounts nutrients per portion. A food's nutritional density refers to its amount of vitamins, minerals, protein, and/or other nutrients.

It is also important to understand what energy density is in nutrition.

Print. Page 1 of 2. Page 1 of 2. These foods have fewer calories per gram, which means you can eat satisfying portions.

What nutrient is most energy-dense? Fat (9 kcal/g), which provides more than twice the calories per gram of carbohydrates and protein (4 kcal/g), is at the opposite end on the energy density spectrum. There is very little fat.

Then, you might also wonder, "How do I compare nutrient densities?"

It is a useful way to compare different foods. A food that provides more nutrition per calorie (or has more nutrition per calorie) is considered nutrient-dense.

What is low nutritional density?

Low-nutrient-density foods (LND) provide high-palatable energy at the expense or essential nutrients.
