What causes a piston-ring to burst?

This is usually caused by engine overheating, spark knock and/or preignition. Fuel can spontaneously ignite from high heat and pressure, which can cause detonation. A sudden rise in pressure can cause pistons and rings to crack.

So, what happens when a piston ring cracks?

If the piston rings become damaged, engine oil can leak into the combustion chamber causing it to start burning and producing thick grayish-white smoke.

What are the signs of bad piston rings, too? Below is a list of common signs and symptoms that indicate bad piston rings.

  • Exhaust smoke can be white or gray.
  • Excessive oil intake.
  • Acceleration requires low power
  • Persistent loss of power, or poor performance.

How long does it take for piston rings to be broken in?

20 minutes
