What are Cisco Vty lines and what do they mean?

VTY lines are Virtual Terminal lines that allow you to control inbound Telnet connections. They are virtual in that they function as software functions and have no hardware. They are shown in the configuration as line VTY 0 4.

What does Vty, then, refer to?

Virtual Teletype

Also, find out what line Vty5 15 means. VTY lines can be used to create out-of-band management sessions for devices. A vty can't be used to manage the device if a password has not been provided. Administrators may allow junior staff to use lines 1 - 4, and senior staff to use lines 5 to 15.

What does Vty 0 4 mean in this context?

Avtya is shorthand for Virtual Teletype. VTY allows you to access the device via Telnet or SSH. The device can support 5 simultaneous virtual connections, which could be Telnet or SSH. In other words, 5 (0 a 4) may be connected to the Router/Switch.
