Is the elm tree losing its leaves?

The American elm, like most deciduous trees in its family, sheds its leaves in fall. It could be a sign of a problem in the tree's health if the leaves fall earlier in the season.

The same goes for my elm tree. Why are its leaves falling?

There are many reasons why deciduous trees may prematurely shed their leaves. It has been the dry, warm weather in recent years that has caused trees a significant amount of leaf shedding. Dutch elm diseases can also be a cause of death in elm trees.

Also, an elm tree is considered an evergreen. Evergreens are plants with leaves that last all year. They include trees like elm and pine. The deciduous tree that loses its leaves each season includes trees like the maple. Pine and elm are two examples of conifers.

How can I tell if my elm trees are dying?

The common sign of Dutch Elm Disease is the withering and falling off of the top leaves. Your leaves will turn yellow or brown during the summer or late spring. The crown (top) of the tree will then slowly lose its leaves.

What is causing the bark to fall off my elm trees?

Excessive heat can cause bark to fall off, similar to frost damage. Bark falling off a sick tree means that you might see signs of stress like cankers, sap or dead leaves and/or twigs.
