Are swing gates necessary for fixed ladders?

OSHA believes that the ladders state that the ladder's passage must be protected by a swinging gate, or offset, so that no person can walk directly into the opening.



What are the support requirements for fixed ladders then?

Fixed ladders must support loads not exceeding 250 pounds (114 kilograms) per load, if they are placed between two attachments. Fixed ladders must also be able to support additional anticipated loads due to wind, rigging, ice buildup and other hazards.

Who can also inspect fixed ladders? It is still necessary to inspect fixed ladders, walkways, and stairs. This requires the expertise of a qualified and trained person. It is the responsibility of the duty holder to ensure that this inspection takes place on a regular basis (minimum 12 months). It must be documented.

Know also the OSHA standard regarding ladders.

All portable ladders should have a minimum clearance of 11.5 inches (29cm) between the side rails. The landing area's edge must not be less than 7 inches (18cm) and not more than 12 inches (30cm). If the step-across distance is more than 12 inches (30 cm), a landing platform must be provided.

What is the maximum height that fall protection must be on fixed ladders

Fixed ladders: Employees who climb or work on fixed ladders higher than 24 feet must have fall protection. 29 CFR 1926.1053(a),(19) stipulates that fall protection must always be available for climbs on fixed ladders over 24 feet.
