Do you need to use PVC primer?

Primers are recommended for joints that will have liquid media passing through. primer serves two purposes: to initiate the chemical reaction that softens PVC, and to prepare the surface for the solvent cement. The better your PVC outer layer will cement in your joint, the more it will soften.

This is a question that you should ask yourself: Do you let PVC primer dry before cementing?

PVC Primer doesn't need to dry before being used. In fact, it should be wet to do its job and not hinder the cement. Remember, plumbers are in a rush and don't want to wait for the primer to dry before they grab the cement.

Also, is it necessary to sand PVC before glueing? For better fittings, PVC should be chamfered before glueing. I was also instructed to cut the CPVC pipe, apply glue, and then insert it into the fitting under pressure. There is no need to sand, chamfer or wipe with primer.

Alternatively, one might also wonder if PVC cleaner is the same as primer.

PVC cleaner is used for removing grease, dirt, and oil from PVC surfaces. PVC cleaners can be used to clean surfaces. PVC primer will be used to join the pipe to the fittings. The PVC primer must be used even if a PVC cleaner has been used.

How long does PVC primer or cement take to dry?

Two hours
