Which is better oil based or water based varnish?

Oil-based finishes were more durable in the past than their water-based counterparts. Water- - based varnish doesn't turn brown over time and will keep the wood's color truer than a oil_ based finishing. It does not alter the grain and also doesn't aflatten the wood grain like oil-based finishes.

Which is better, oil-based or water-based polyurethane?

The oil-based polyurethane is more appealing. It has more color and shine, and looks exactly like hardwood. Water-based polyurethane has a duller colour and a more dull finish. The water-based polyurethane (left), is lighter and more duller than the oil-based polyurethane (right).

Can you use water-based varnish over oil-based varnish? Answer: It is possible to use a water-based varnish over an oil-based finish provided it is in good condition. You should remove grease, dirt and wax by scrubbing the surface with a wood prep/cleaner/de-glosser, or mineral spirits and synthetic steel wool.

Keep this in mind, is water-based varnish good for you?

Water-Based Varnish has many advantages. It doesn't alter the color of the surface you applied it to. It is not a fire hazard. Because it has a high solids content, it builds up quickly. Water-based varnish can be easily cleaned up after use.

How long can Polyurethane last?

Gloss oil-based varnishes, polyurethane, and Danish oil can last between 10 and 20 years. However, satin finishes and stains will likely fail sooner because pigments and flattening agent disable the driers. Water-based paints and coatings can last for up to three years. Shellac can become brittle in as little as one year.
