Molds are different from other fungal species because of their morphology. Molds are microscopic multicellular organisms that are characterized by filaments called Hyphae. While yeasts are unicellular microorganisms and mushrooms have spore-producing macroscopic fruiting bodies, they are multicellular microscopic organisms.

Slime molds are composed of cellulose, while fungi are composed of chitin. Slime molds are part of the Kingdom Protista and they are sometimes called fungus like protista.

Is mold therefore a fungus, or a bacteria?

While molds can be considered fungi, bacteria is not. Fungi can be considered eukaryotes. This means that their DNA is contained in a nucleus, also known as a proper or clearly defined nucleus.
