Is it possible to heat or ice infiltrated IV?

You should check the policy of your institution regarding what type of compress (cold or warm) should be used. If the infiltration solution is isotonic, a warm compression is recommended to reduce discomfort and absorb the infiltration.

Also, is it possible to put heat on the IVs?

Use a warm or cold compress for about 30 minutes each 2-3 hours to reduce swelling.

How can you tell if your IV has been infiltrated? Infiltration signs and symptoms include:

  1. An inflammation at or near the site of insertion. Swollen, taut and painful skin.
  2. Blanching and coolness around IV site
  3. Wet or damp dressing
  4. Infusions can be slowed down or stopped.
  5. There is no backflow of blood in IV tubing when the solution container is lowered.

What do you do if an IV is infiltrated?

Take care of the infiltration site. Rest your arm and raise your arm as high as your heart. This will reduce swelling and pain. To keep your arm elevated, place it on blankets or pillows. Your healthcare provider may direct you not to use lotions, soaps, or creams in the area.

Is IV infiltration dangerous?

Additionally, fluids and medications can cause irritation to tissues. Infiltration can result in blisters, necrotic tissue, dead tissue, or even amputation. In rare cases, fluids can leak into an area and cause compartment syndrome, which is nerve, tissue, or muscle damage.
