Is it normal to smell propane near tank?

Lingering smells
Sometimes, a gas smell around your tank does not necessarily mean that there is a leak. You might notice appliances like your stove or oven smelling more than normal when your tank is low. The gas may temporarily smell mildly like mercaptan, but it will eventually dissipate.

Keep this in mind, what should you do if propane smells outside?

Take these steps immediately if you smell gas inside or outside your home:

  1. All sparks and flames must be extinguished. Remove all open flames and smoking materials.
  2. Move on.
  3. Turn off the gas.
  4. Report the leak.
  5. Do not go back to the area or building.
  6. Have your system checked.

The next question is: Is it normal for propane to be emitted from grilling? Use a mild soap and water solution on the hose. Bubbles will be released from a propane leaking. If you notice a gas leak in your grill, use smell to determine if there is a flame. You should immediately leave the grill and contact the fire department if you smell gas.

So, how can I smell propane?

You may not be aware that propane is actually odorless when it is in its natural state. Ethyl Mercaptan is the additive that gives off the odor. This additive is added to the propane so that you can detect leaks and respond accordingly. Here's what to do if you smell rotten.

Can you die from propane fumes?
