Can you start a compost bin in the winter?

It is a great way for you to prepare for the spring and summer by composting in winter. New gardeners especially need to prepare as far ahead as possible. You will have a more successful garden if you improve the quality of your soil before it gets too late.

This is why you might consider using a composter to keep the winter cool.

All winter, compost. Your compost may freeze solid and stop decomposition, but composting is not affected. The freeze-thaw cycles can actually help to break down the materials you are adding so that they will decompose faster when spring arrives.

You can also keep a compost container in your garage. The Bin can be placed anywhere you have enough space. It can be outside your kitchen door to compost food scraps. Or near your vegetable garden to collect weeds and trimmings. If you don't want to look at the composter, it can be placed inside a garage or storage container.

What do you do with your winter compost?

The microbes in the compost should be kept active during the colder months. If winter composting is possible, move compost containers to a sunny area of your yard. To insulate the pile and keep it warm, add layers of straw, cardboard, or sawdust.

When should I start my compost container?

Composting in Fall Consider starting a compost bin in fall when you are cleaning out your garden and getting ready for winter. Your compost pile will be ready for spring if you start composting in the fall.
