What is the difference between Estivation and hibernation?

The main difference between hibernation and aestivation lies in the fact that hibernation refers to summer sleep, while aestivation refers to winter sleep during which an organism is in dormant mode.

What happens during Estivation?

Estivation is when animals stop their activity during the hot, dry summer months. During estivation animals slow down their breathing and become still. However, it happens during the hottest months in the year. Most likely to experience estivation are reptiles, amphibians and molluscs.

What is hibernation? One example of a true hibernator is the woodchuck. The hibernation of the woodchucks reduces their heart rate from 80 beats per hour to four or five. It also drops its body temperature by 60 degrees below normal. Chipmunks, bats, and other animals are also hibernators.

Aestivation is also important.

stivation (from Latin: aestas, summer, but also spelled estivation in American English) is a state of animal dormancy, similar to hibernation, although taking place in the summer rather than the winter. Aestivation can occur in both aquatic and terrestrial animals.

What animals go through Estivation

Snails, birds, turtles, hedgehogs and tortoises are all examples of animals that estivate. Estivation refers to the process by which animals go into dormancy during hot seasons in order to conserve energy.
