What is an IVP Exam?

Intravenous Pyelogram ( IVP ) uses contrast material to examine your kidneys, bladder, and kidneys. It can also diagnose blood in your urine or pain in your lower back.

How is an IVP test done?

An IVP test involves dye being injected through a catheter that is inserted into a person's vein. This is usually done on the forearm or hand. The dye is then tracked through the system using X-rays.

What does an IVP also show? Intravenous pyelograms (IVP) are tests that use X-rays and dye to examine your kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract. It captures images of your bladder, kidneys, and ureters.

How long does an IVP take?

A typical IVP takes less than an hour. If your kidneys work slower, the testing may take up to 4 hours. After the test, you should return to your usual diet and activities. You may be advised by your doctor to consume more fluids than usual to flush out the contrast dye.

What's the difference between IVP and a CT scan?

A CT scan provides a cross-sectional view. A CT scan doesn't have to use contrast agents in certain cases. This can provide more information than an IVP. It does however increase radiation.
