What does water lettuce look like?

Notes: Water Lettuce, a floating plant from Tropical America, is described. It has thick, fleshy, green leaves that are heavily ribbed. They form a rosette that looks similar to and a small head of lettuce . Water lettuce grows for its leaves, but it does flower. The small flowers are often hidden between the leaves.



Water lettuce is also an oxygenator.

The floating plant group includes duckweed, water hyacinth and water lettuce. Submerged plants are the best oxygenators because they release oxygen (O2) directly to the pond water.

Is water lettuce poisonous? Water lettuce is an aggressive surface-cropper that can deplete oxygen and kill fish. The leaves can be poisonous and cause illness if they are eaten or chewed, especially if small animals consume them.

Water lettuce reproduces vegetatively through the production of new rosettes at the ends of its stolons. The plant reproduces vegetatively through stolons. Each stolons produces a new rosette. The mother plant remains connected to the daughter plants.

Reproduction water lettuce can be done by using stolons or seeds covered with sand that are kept partially submerged in water.
