Should you refrigerate potatoes?

Answer: The fridge is not the best place to store potatoes. The United States potato Board points out that refrigeration can cause potatoes darken during cooking and a unpleasantly sweet flavor. The reason is that the cold environment in the fridge converts potato starch into sugar.

It is also important to know how to store potatoes at home.

Store Your Potatoes

  1. All potatoes should be inspected for soft spots, sprouts and mold.
  2. To ensure adequate ventilation, place the potatoes in a cardboard container, paper bag, mesh bag or basket.
  3. Keep your potatoes in a cool, dark, humid place (45 to 50° Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature).

How can you keep potatoes fresher for longer than the time mentioned above? The best potatoes are stored in a well ventilated container. They should be kept dry and away from direct sunlight at temperatures between 45-55 degrees F.

Is it okay to keep potatoes in the fridge?

Potatoes should not be kept in the refrigerator. This is because potatoes that are stored in the refrigerator can increase their sugar levels, which could lead to higher levels of acrylamide when they are roasted, baked, or fried at high temperatures.

Can you refrigerate onions and potatoes?

Instead, freeze the rest and keep what you eat within four days at room temp. They love their original mesh bag (or any other bag that allows air circulation) in the pantry. Keep them out of potatoes as they can emit moisture and gases which can cause onion to rot. Keep them in a drawer at room temperatures.
