What are the signs of a bad ignition system?

A faulty ignition coil can cause a few symptoms which alert the driver to a possible problem.

  • Misfires, rough idle and loss of power are all common symptoms. Engine performance problems are one of the most common signs that a faulty ignition coil can cause.
  • Check Engine Light is on.
  • The car is not starting.

Are ignition coils susceptible to becoming weaker? While most ignition coils are reliable and long-lasting, a weaker coil can cause problems under the hood. It is impossible to operate a car without providing high voltage to the sparkplugs to ignite the mixture of air and fuel. Secondary winding defects are the most common cause of coil failures.

What is the working principle of a 2-wire ignition coil?

It is common to have 2 wires. One is an ignition controlled 12v wire and the other goes to the resistor (block with two terminals on one side) so that the coil receives approximately 9v during normal running.
