Are slug pellets cruel?

To kill the slugs, pellets that are made with iron phosphate or metaldehyde are a good example. Pesticides that kill beneficial earthworms or other animals have been banned. This poison can also pose a danger to pets and humans, as well as other beneficial animals living in the garden.

So, are slug pellets dangerous?

Three main types of poison are found in slug pellets: iron(III)phosphate, methiocarb, and metaldehyde. Each one acts in a different way and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some pellets can even be fatal to humans and pollute groundwater. Metaldehyde and methiocarb can cause death in pets and humans.

Salt can cause pain in slugs. Yes! By doing this you rapidly dehydrate (and essentially burn) them. It hurts. You can see how salt affects slugs' reactions when it is sprinkled on them. They will writhe in pain until they die.

Is it possible for slug pellets to be harmful to dogs?

Metaldehyde is the active ingredient in most slug pellets. It can cause severe allergic reactions in dogs and cats. Slug and snail pellets that are pet-friendly can be purchased online or in most garden centres.
